Source: Magness et al. 1971

The plant is an annual related to sunflower, 1 to 2 feet high and hairy, with oblong, entire, thick leaves. The flowers are large heads with yellow or orange rays. The dried flower heads are used to flavor soups and stews. Such use is more general in Europe than in the U.S.
