Sulfate uptake and assimilation

S-Methylcysteine

An alternative pathway of synthesis of S-methylcysteine involves reaction of O-acetylserine with methane thiol (Giovanelli et al, 1980):

OAS + CH3SH ---> S-methylcysteine + acetate

This reaction is analogous to that catalyzed by cysteine synthase:

OAS + H2S ---> cysteine + acetate
