It is now estimated that the total nitrogen fixed by human activities exceeds that of global natural nitrogen fixation (Mlot, 1997).
Human activities now funnel over 140 million metric tons of N into the environment each year; equivalent to 10 million semi-trucks of dry nitrogen fertilizer (Mlot, 1997).
