Utilization of Nitrogen by Plants

Growth in World Demand for Nitrogen Fertilizers

It is now estimated that the total nitrogen fixed by human activities exceeds that of global natural nitrogen fixation (Mlot, 1997).

Human activities now funnel over 140 million metric tons of N into the environment each year; equivalent to 10 million semi-trucks of dry nitrogen fertilizer (Mlot, 1997).
