Most of the leaf lettuce is grown in California (81%) and Arizona (17%). The total U.S. leaf lettuce crop in 1997 was harvested from 42,330 acres and yielded 9,241,000 cwt (average yield = 218 cwt/acre), with a total value of $244,841,000. In 1997, production was up about 0.9% from 1996.
