Most of the romaine lettuce is grown in California (68.5%) and Arizona (28.3%). The total U.S.romaine lettuce crop in 1997 was harvested from 33,550 acres and yielded 9,279,000 cwt (average yield = 277 cwt/acre), with a total value of $170,954,000. In 1997 production of romaine lettuce was up about 7.3% from 1996.
