Quality

There are many components of quality and even more factors that impact quality. The relative importance of an individual component varies with commodity. The quality of a commodity is influenced by its genetic potential and everything that is done to it including handling and preparation by the final consumer. The seed company selects varieties that have the size, shape, shelf life, maturity, disease resistance, taste and many other components of quality that the company perceives will make it the variety of choice for both the grower and the consumer. The expression of that genetic potential for quality is changed by the growing environment and by how it is harvested, packaged, stored and handled.
