7. Specialized Teaching Responsibilities:

7.1 Instructor: Herbs, Spices and Medicinal Plants. Part of the commercial horticultural production series, Purdue University (HORT 416). Focus on this undergraduate mini-class (5-week; 1 credit) is on the horticultural production of these specialty crops. This class is taught each Fall.

7.2. International Training Program in Aromatic and Medicinal Plants. Organizer and Main Instructor. This two-week intensive training program focuses on the botany, chemistry, biochemistry, horticulture, marketing, product quality, and natural products extraction, processing and pharmacognosy of herbs, spices and medicinal plants. Also includes germplasm collection and new crop development. This program has been successfully held 3X (1993, 1995, 1997) and will again be held in June, 1999. The program is financially self-supportive, each class provides training for 20 students (mostly Ph.D.’s) who have come from over 25 countries (and from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, North America), some with USDA-AID, FAO, and WHO funding. CE credits units available by Div. of Continuing Education. Co-sponsored by School of Pharmacy, Univ. of Illinois-Chicago.

7.3. An International Training Program in Essential Oils: Advanced Studies, Part 1; and Part 2. Organizer and Main Instructor The focus of the program is to provide training in the chemistry, processing and quality control of essential oils, with profiles as to the sources and origins of the oils. Part 1 has been successfully held 3X (1995, 1996, 1997), Part 2, twice (1996 and 1997), will again be held in July, 1999. Each Part provides one week of intensive training, and 4 CE credits for each part are avaiable by Div. of Continuing Education. Students are required to complete a research project between Parts 1 and 2. This program is self-supporting and the participants have been coming largely from private industry.
