ULMACEAE

Celtis sinensis, Pers. China: fresh fruit eaten. Leaves boiled, then eaten with oil and salt. Vernacular name: Hackberry. Ref. READ.

Celtis integrifolia, Lam. Nigeria (Kano State, northern): leaves and fruit eaten. Vernacular names - Hausa: Zuwo. Kanuri: Nguzo. Ref. MORTIMORE.

Ulmus campestris, L. (syn. Ulmus glabra, Mill.) China: leaves boiled then eaten with oil and salt. Inner bark is removed, powdered, steamed and eaten. The seeds are eaten, but reportedly cause drowsiness, if consumed in excess. Chemical composition (seeds): Protein = 34%. Carbohydrate = 17%. Fat = 28.2%. Ash = 5%. The inner bark is rich in bassorin and lime. Characteristically mucilaginous. Ref. READ.

Ulmus macrocarpa, Hance. Manchuria (eastern forests): fruit eaten. Ref. BARANOV.

Ulmus propinqua, Koidz. Manchuria (eastern forests): leaves eaten. Reported toxic. Ref. BARANOV.

Ulmus pubescens, Walt. (syn. Ulmus fulva, Michx.) North America: inner bark eaten by Native American groups. Ref. MAXWELL.
