ALS Cultivar Selection

Strawberries are listed as candidate ALS crops to add variety to the diet for a long-term space mission. In addition strawberries are good sources of antioxidants that may help to mitigate radiation damage to humans in space. We have begun studies of various cultivars of strawberries to determine characteristics like flavor, yield, fruiting duration, and growth requirements for inclusion of these small fruits in an ALS. We are grateful to Indiana Berry and Plant Co. for their help with this project.
