Current Research Interests

The objective of the research program is to elucidate the physiological and biophysical mechanisms by which plants adapt to water shortage and saline stress. The principal focus is on whole-plant processes that enhance or maintain water uptake by roots, increase the plant's capacity to retain water in a desiccating environment, or maintain a positive carbon balance during prolonged drought stress. Current projects include: (1) molecular and biophysical analyses of water transport across root membranes, including a study of aquaporin gene expression in roots and leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana subjected to osmotic stress, and (2) evaluation of the role of the ascorbic acid cycle in mediating signal transduction leading to stress-induced stomatal closure.
