On Landscape... The landscape of middle America is rich and varied. And it is almost entirely human-made. I ask my students to become archaeologists of the built environment...to read the clues all around us, and to understand what they reveal about us as a people. There may be as much to learn from the layout and patterns of a Wal-Mart parking lot as a garden by Le Notre. |
| The best way to understand the built environment is to experience it. We need to travel, to keep journals and to draw what we see. We stand to learn a great deal by exiting the Interstate and traveling as our grandparents did, driving through town centers, stopping to eat in the coffee shops. | ![]() |
