Herbicide Action Intensive
Course
October 22-27, 2006
Herbicide Action is an intensive, five-day course covering topics
related to understanding the activity, selectivity, behavior, and fate
of herbicides in plants and the environment. It should be of great value
to those working with agricultural chemical companies in research, development,
and technical service; to crop consultants; and to others working on
weed control in either the public or private sector.
The course begins on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. and ends Friday at
noon. The format will consist of lectures (illustrated with slides
whenever possible), demonstrations, and discussions. The WSSA Herbicide
Handbook and a book of lecture notes, which is revised annually,
will be provided to each participant.

| Stephen Weller, Ph.D., Purdue
professor of weed science and director of the Herbicide Action Course,
is a specialist in horticultural crop weed management, studies the biology
of problem weeds, and has conducted research investigating physiological,
biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of plant resistance to herbicides.
Professor Weller directs the research of several graduate students and
is a fellow of the North Central Weed Science Society and of the Weed
Science Society of America. He is co-author of the fourth edition of
the book Weed Science Principles and Practices, published by
John Wiley and Sons. Professor Weller will present six lectures and
demonstrations using fresh plant material to illustrate principles covered
in the lectures.
Donn Thill, Ph.D., University of Idaho, teaches and
conducts research in weed-crop competition, weed management systems
in cereal production, and herbicide resistance in weeds. Thill also
directs the research of several graduate students. He is past president
and a fellow of the Western Society of Weed Science, and received their
Outstanding Weed Scientist award in 1996. In 1990, 1997, and 1999, he
received the Outstanding Young Weed Science Scientist, Research, and
Fellow Awards, respectively, from the Weed Science Society of America.
Thill is currently past president of the Weed Science Society of America.
He will present fi ve lectures.
David C. Bridges, Ph.D., University of Georgia, conducts
research in weed-crop competition, weed management in agronomic crops,
and modeling of weed-crop interactions. Bridges also directs the research
of several graduate students. He is widely recognized as a lecturer
and as a spokesperson for the weed science community on issues facing
our discipline. In 1998, he received the Outstanding Young Weed Scientist
Award of the Weed Science Society of America. He will present four lectures.
William G. (Bill Johnson), Ph.D., associate professor
of weed science at Purdue University, is a specialist in weed biology
and agronomic weed management. Active in extension and research, he
conducts several training programs related to herbicide injury, herbicide
resistance in weeds, and problemsolving. Professor Johnson will discuss
herbicide use, weed management systems in glyphosate-resistant crops,
practical aspects of glyphosate-resistant weeds, and nitrogen use by
weeds in crop production.
George E. Van Scoyoc, Ph.D., is a professor of agronomy
at Purdue University. He has conducted research on the sorption of organic
compounds by soils, organic matter, and clay minerals and has studied
the movement of nutrients and organic compounds through soils. He is the
recipient of both the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science
Society of America Outstanding Educator Awards. Professor Van Scoyoc will
present information on factors that infl uence the sorption and movement
of pesticides in soil.
|
John G. Graveel, Ph.D., Purdue professor
of environmental soil science, has conducted extensive research on the
fate of xenobiotics in the soil environment and the effect of cropping
management systems on soil erosion and soil properties. The recipient
of many awards for outstanding teaching, Professor Graveel will present
information on characteristics of soil colloids and the mechanisms of
adsorption of herbicides.
Ronald F. Turco, Jr., Ph.D., is a professor of agronomy
and director of the Environmental Sciences and Engineering Institute

Science, Regulation, Stewardship, and Communication, Wiley & Sons
(in press), and The Complete Federal and State Compliance Guide for
Hoosier Businesses, published in 2001 by Purdue University Press. Whitford’s
