HORT 413 Tree Fruit Production
Paper review
Each student is required
to write a review of each of 4 scientific papers that I will distribute. The
best 3 grades for these will count 10 points each towards your final course
grade, with the lowest grade dropped. You are welcome to discuss the papers
with other class members, but each student must write their own review. The
reviews are due on Sept. 28, Oct. 5, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. I will grade and return
your reviews before the next review is due.
Guidelines for the preparation
of reviews:
• Must be no longer than 2 pages (double spaced, 12 pt font)
• What was the goal of this study? Why did they do it?
• What did the researchers find?
• Was the research conducted well? Appropriate controls and measurements?
• How does this further our understanding? Do the results have any practical
applications, or further our knowledge of tree physiology? In other words, SO
WHAT? Concentrate on answering the “so what?” question.
• I expect reviews to be well written, with correct spelling and grammar.
Points will be deducted for poorly written reviews.
You may find it helpful to consult other books or materials for background on
the subject area.
