Watering and Fertilization
– “You can’t water too much, just too often!”
- Allow to dry out
between waterings
- Water thoroughly and
uniformly when watering is necessary
- Use a high quality
water soluble or slow release commercial fertilizer
- Tone down by late
summer or prior to flowering for summer flowering species
- Avoid high nitrogen
fertilizers!
- Closely monitor ph of
both soil mix and water!
Pinching and pruning
– most species require very little pruning during the production cycle
- Cut back tall or leggy
plants at planting time
- It may be necessary to
root prune some heavily rooted bare root plants
- ‘Open up’
roots of pot bound plugs at planting time
- If plants become
excessively tall or leggy thin and cut back to maintain quality
