Greenhouses:  A Place for Plants

Indiana Horticultural Congress

A presentation by:  Larry J. Houser

April Showers may bring May Flowers but, you need a greenhouse!

Well, you might need a few other things too, such as:  knowledge, water, fertilizer, plants, soil mix, containers, heaters, fans, pesticides, sunlight, good weather, hard work, land, zoning, building permits, insurance, accountants, lawyers…the list just keeps going.  And it’s one thing to grow them, YOU ALSO HAVE TO SELL THEM!  That’s another list that we’ll have to deal with later.

If you want to grow “May Flowers” in Indiana, you will definitely need a greenhouse.  What kind, what size, where and how are questions we will be dealing with this afternoon.

Following is an outline of this afternoon’s presentation.  We will be covering a lot in this 40-minute session, so if you have specific questions or need further clarification in any of the areas, please not it on this outline and feel free to visit with me during the conference or give me a call at 317-733-0693 (The Woods Edge Greenhouse) or 317-769-6633 (my home office).

“Build it and they will come.  Build It Properly and they will come back!”

Plants!

You can grow ‘em like this!

But it’s difficult without one of these:

Remember what happened last week?  (7 degrees last Thursday!)

Now you know why we have greenhouses!

You can’t grow most plants in a tent!

Commercial Greenhouses

Retail:  Grow a little for a lot!

Wholesale:  Grow a lot for a little!

Greenhouse Types:

         “Gutter Connected”

         “Free Standing”

There’s a lot of new technology available for today’s greenhouses.

We need to understand it before we can take full advantage of it.
