Slide 5 of 21
Notes:
The varieties you’ll see here today are the ones I picked out as being the best in the trial in their color and maturity. All the pictures will have this format. Bon Appetit was harvested at 81 days, and is a homozygous se or se/se from Mesa Maize. We’ve trialed it a number of years, This year it was the best looking of the early varieties; we did not have Temptation that I like to use as an early standard. The yield here is scaled up from our plot yield; there were no significant differences in the trial. Length and Diameter of husked ears are in inches. HC refers to husk cover, with 9 the best, 5 ok, and 1 the worst. TF is tip fill, same 1 to 9 scale. Emergence is given as a percent, and in this case, 64% was below average. We overseeded and thinned to stand after taking emergence counts, so unless emergence was very poor, it did not influence the yield.
While this variety is attractive, a concern I would have is disease. All comments on disease susceptibility in this presentation are based on reports by J. Pataky, Univ. of Illinois, available on-line at: http://sweetcorn.uiuc.edu/Hyb%20Rxn%20Sum-index.html
Moderately susceptible or susceptible to several diseases:
Common rust (MS), SW (MS), MDM (9).
Comments from field: medium to long flag leaves, blunt tip, nicest variety the day is was harvested.
Plants 5 to 6 ft. tall with ears about 1.5 ft. above the ground.
Emergence was below average, but appearance and yield were good.
