Strawberries are grown
on about 500 acres in Indiana, ranking the state 11th
in the U.S. Most are grown in relatively small, upick
operations. Acreage has declined over the past few years.
Strawberry production in Indiana is primarily of June
bearing varieties grown in the matted row system. Though
plasticulture production has become common in other
regions, Indiana's climate is not conducive to plasticulture
production except in the southern counties where mild
fall weather allows for development of branch crowns.
