Pepper - Fruit

There are many varieties of peppers varying in shape, color. and flavor. The two main categories of peppers are sweet and hot.

Most sweet peppers are bell-shaped, thus the name bell pepper is common. But sweet peppers come in a range of shapes from round to oblong, to tapered. The skin is smooth and shiny and can be a range of colors. Most peppers are green when immature, and red if allowed to ripen. But new cultivars offer both mature and immature peppers in red, yellow, orange, purple, or brown.

Hot peppers, including jalapeno, chili, and cayenne, are usually smaller than sweet peppers and come in many different shapes, colors, and heat strengths. Hot peppers also ripen from green to brighter colors (red, yellow, orange, and purple), and the heat intensifies as they ripen. They range from elongated and pod shaped to crinkled and round, but all have smooth and shiny skin.
