Lettuce - Plant

Lettuce plants grow as a rosette of leaves on the ground or on a short stalk. As the plant matures, the leaves increase in number.  There are two main types of lettuce, head and leaf.

Head lettuce is in the shape of a ball and made up of a series of overlapping leaves attached at the bottom to a stem plate. Head lettuce and head cabbage can be similar in appearance, but lettuce leaves are usually thinner and less tightly wrapped.

Romaine lettuce is an upright, lettuce arranged in an elongated, loose head.
